The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the union will embark on a one-day nationwide protest rally over the implementation of a “no-work, no-pay” by the Federal Government on lecturers in the Country.
It was reported that the protest will be organised at the branch levels of the union across public university campuses nationwide and it will take place as a lecture-free day for all lecturers who are members.
This was disclosed by the ASUU chairman, University of Ilorin Chapter, Moyosore Ajao, during an interview on Sunday.
He said; “We are protesting. Branches will choose their own dates, the government needs to understand that we are not casual workers.”
Confirming the development, a letter signed by the chairperson of ASUU, University of Lagos Chapter, Dr Dele Ashir, said the branch will protest on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.
The letter which was addressed to “all stakeholders” said the special congress/ protest rally against the casualization of intellectualism in Nigeria will hold on “Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Julius Berger auditorium.”
Reacting to this development, the Parents under the umbrella of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) said since the lecturers have continued from where they stopped in the 2021/2022 session, they should be paid.
The NAPTAN National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, in a statement said;
“The government should do the right thing. They should pay the lecturers. We all know that some time has been wasted, but since there is an effort to bridge the gap one way or the other, nothing should be done to truncate the process again.’’
“Lecturers and students would only need to forfeit some holidays and as parents, we don’t want anything to rock the boat again. Parents are looking forward to their children finishing their studies and for them to reap the fruits of their labour. The issue of personality clash or ego should not be allowed to push education into another crisis situation.’’
