Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to ensure that anyone involved in electoral fraud during the 2027 general elections is prosecuted, declaring that his camp will “rig those who rig” the process.

Obi made the statement on Wednesday at a town hall meeting organised by the NDC in Nasarawa State, where he addressed party supporters on electoral integrity and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor said that if elected president, he would ensure that electoral malpractice was no longer tolerated in the country.

“And let me assure you, number two, if elected the president of Nigeria, nobody will rig the election in this country again,” he added.

Obi emphasised the need to strengthen political parties and improve electoral processes to prevent manipulation and ensure that the will of voters is respected.

He also called for stricter enforcement of educational requirements for individuals seeking elective offices, insisting that candidates must have attended both primary and secondary schools.

According to him, anyone who forges educational certificates or fails to satisfy the stipulated requirements should face legal consequences, including imprisonment.

“For you to contest the election, you must have attended a primary school, you must have attended a secondary school, and it will be visible, it will be clear,” he said.

The NDC presidential candidate further vowed that public officials and other individuals found guilty of manipulating elections under his administration would be prosecuted, irrespective of their status.

“Any high-ranking official, anybody who is involved with the election, under my watch, that rigs the election, will go to jail,” Obi declared.

He maintained that his administration would prioritise the rule of law, institutional accountability and equal treatment before the law, stressing that no individual would be permitted to act above established legal standards.

“Under my watch, Nigeria must be a country that has a law and votes from number one person to the last person must obey the rule of law. Nobody will be above the law. Nobody will behave rascally,” he said.

Obi’s remarks underscore his stated commitment to electoral reforms and accountability as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
