President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday administered the oath of office to four newly elected senators who emerged victorious in the recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The lawmakers inaugurated into the Red Chamber are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Rivers South East, Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Nasarawa North, Ikeje Asogwu of the APC representing Enugu North, and Dayo Faduyile of the APC representing Ondo South.

Their swearing-in followed the bye-elections held last Saturday to fill vacant seats in the affected senatorial districts.

Nwogu was elected to represent Rivers South East after the seat became vacant following the death of former senator Barinada Mpigi. In Nasarawa North, Anza succeeded the late Godiya Akwaashiki, while Asogwu emerged to fill the vacancy created by the death of Okechukwu Ezea. Faduyile’s election came after the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

During plenary, the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered both the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office to the new senators.

Welcoming the lawmakers, Akpabio congratulated them on their victories and described the Senate as “a family of the most elite club in the world.”

He urged the senators to focus on promoting national development and reminded them that their responsibility extends beyond party interests to representing the entire Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Senate President also encouraged them to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders, as amended in 2023, to enable them to effectively carry out their legislative duties.

Among those present at the ceremony were Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, alongside other dignitaries.
