Sokoto: Nigeria loses 17 security personnel as Bandits attack Joint Military Base in Sabon Birni, many others still missing

MONDAY- 27th September, 2021: Residents in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state said gunmen suspected to be armed Bandits have allegedly attacked a joint military base codenamed “Burkusuma camp’ located in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state and in the process killed unspecified number of military personnel.

The attack which took place in the early hours of Friday has so far left casualties of about 17 security personnel ,as it was earlier reported that the bandits came in large number and started shooting at the camp from every angle.

But a military source who is not authorised to speak on the matter said a large number of suspected bandits were killed when a military base was attack in the Eastern Senatorial District of Sokoto

He said the marauding bandits also burnt down two patrol vehicles and carted away another one which was used to convey food items stolen from the villagers.

A personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps who sought for anonymity confirmed to our reporter that three of their Corp members were among the casualties.

The spokesman of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major Yahaya Ngulde could not be reached for comment as at the time of filing this report, however the Police Public Relation Officer, ASP Sanusi Abubakar said he was not aware of the attack while the Commissioner for Carriers and Security Matters, Colonel Garba Moyi (rtd) has confirmed to newsmen the attack on the military base but that he was not sure of the number of casualties.

A source close to the families of the affected victims of the attack on military base at Burkusuma camp in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state said four families have been informed of the death of their relations at the Mobile Police Barracks in Sokoto.

The source said families of the affected personnel at the barracks are now mourning their deceased relations

But sources within the security circles confirmed to newsmen that seventeen persons have been killed in the attack and several personnel are still missing.

A source said four police personnel, three men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and seven personnel of the Nigeria Army are among the victims of the attack.

When contacted, spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Sokoto state command said only the military can comment on the incident.

Burkusuma is a border community in Sabon Birni, local government area and have witnessed a number of attacks from suspected bandits leading to the dead of several persons and displaced several others taking refuge in the neighboring Niger Republic.

Sokoto state Commissioner for Carriers and Security Matters, Garba Moyi had earlier confirmed the attack on the military base but did not give the number of casualties.
