Majlinda Kelmendi becomes Kosovo first Olympic medallist after winning gold in women’s judo 52kg event.

Majlinda Kelmendi , 25 is a Kosovar Albanian judoka and a double world champion with two European titles. As of 2013, Majlinda stands first in the international rankings by the International Judo Federation in the −52 kg category

All Russian athletes have been banned from the Paralympic Games this September, after an official statement from the IPC confirmed state-sponsored doping extends to Russian Para sport.

If the build-up to the games of the XXXI Olympiad was plagued with questions, day one of Rio 2016 provided resounding answers, and certainly did not disappoint.

The unrest in the host city has not gone away, but Saturday's action showcased the glorious, transcendental escapism of sport at its very best.
