Confusion resurfaced in Osogbo the capital city of Osun State on Monday as officers of the Nigerian Police fired teargas at students of Osun state owned tertiary institutions, during a protest over the indefinite strike embarked upon by the lecturers of the institutions due to non-payment of salary by the state government.

The protesters were mainly students from the four state owned tertiary institution, which includes, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke and Osun State Colleges of Education in Ilesa and Ila-Orangun.

The protest however disturbed economic activities in some parts of the city and caused traffic gridlock along Gbongan/Ibadan expressway, as the protesting students matched to the governor's office to explain their grief to the state governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Some of the students sustained serious injury when running for cover, while some of them were arrested by the policemen. Buses brought by the students for protest were also seized by the policemen.

While speaking on the issue, President of the National Association of Nigeria Students, Osun State chapter, Mr Luqman Adekitan berated the action of the police for causing havoc, saying the protest was peaceful until the policemen came to disperse them.

Reacting to the development, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola explained that the state government was working tirelessly to ensure smooth running of the tertiary education in the state.
