Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a dramatic 1-0 victory over Venezuela in their quarter-final encounter on Sunday.
Azeezat Oduntan proved to be Nigeria’s heroine, scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to secure the hard-fought victory and keep the country’s title hopes alive.
The Flamingos had pressed for a breakthrough throughout the encounter, creating several opportunities through Kanyinsola Yusuf, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu and Oluebube Umejiaku, but struggled to convert their chances.
Venezuela also threatened on several occasions, particularly towards the closing stages, with Astrid Granadillo and Abril Alejo attempting to restore parity. However, Nigeria’s defence remained resolute despite the late pressure.
The match eventually ended after eight minutes of added time, with the Nigerian girls holding firmly to their narrow advantage to secure a place among the competition’s final four teams.
The victory further highlights the Flamingos’ impressive turnaround in the tournament after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening fixture.
Nigeria responded to the setback with victories over Puerto Rico (2-0), defending champions North Korea (3-1) and Mexico (2-1) before overcoming Venezuela in the quarter-finals.
The Flamingos will now face Brazil in what promises to be a crucial semi-final encounter on Wednesday, November 4, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
Brazil booked their place in the last four after staging a comeback to defeat China 2-1 in their quarter-final clash.
With a place in the final within reach, Nigeria will be seeking another determined performance against the South Americans as they continue their quest for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup crown.
