The Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Bissau.

The result ended coach Eric Chelle’s unbeaten start since he took charge of the Nigerian national team.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino Dju, who curled a well-placed effort beyond goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and into the far corner.

Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut chances as the hosts held their advantage through the remainder of the first half.

Chelle responded with a double substitution at the break, bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi.

The changes, however, failed to produce the desired turnaround as Guinea-Bissau doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé.

Nigeria had a chance to pull one back in the closing stages, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje made a crucial save from close range to deny George Ilenikhena in the 87th minute.

The hosts then put the result beyond doubt when Álvaro Djaló scored their third goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The win lifts Guinea-Bissau to six points from two matches after their earlier 2-0 victory over Tanzania, while Nigeria remain on three points following their 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar.

The Super Eagles will now look to bounce back in their next qualifying fixture as they continue their push for a place at the 2027 AFCON.
