Self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Simon Ekpa, has maintained that he was wrongly convicted by a Finnish court, expressing confidence that his prison sentence will be overturned on appeal.

Ekpa was convicted last year on terrorism-related offences connected to violence and killings in Nigeria's South-East. On September 1, 2025, a Finnish district court sentenced him to six years in prison.

Speaking to a group of Biafra supporters during his appeal hearing on Thursday, August 6, Ekpa insisted that justice would ultimately prevail, arguing that the wrong individual had been imprisoned.

"I’m very confident that the truth is going to come out. They will know that the wrong person has been imprisoned," he said.

The separatist leader is currently appealing the conviction, insisting that he is innocent of the charges brought against him. The Finnish appellate court has yet to deliver its verdict.
