President Bola Tinubu on Thursday convened a nearly two-hour security meeting with the nation’s service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session marked the first formal engagement with the top security leadership since Tunji Disu assumed office as Inspector-General of Polic.

It was learnt that the security chiefs arrived without their usual official vehicles, complicating immediate identification. The meeting, held behind closed doors, concluded around 5:10 pm, with the service chiefs and the IGP departing the Villa following extensive deliberations with the President.

The gathering comes amid heightened security concerns across the country, particularly in the North-East, where recent attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have intensified. In the past week, the military lost at least three commanding officers overseeing forward operating bases, underscoring the escalating threat to personnel and installations.

Recent incidents include the assault on Ngoshe in Borno State, which resulted in abductions, as well as separate attacks in Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok, all within Borno. These developments have prompted firm responses from both President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, who have vowed to deploy overwhelming force to quell the insurgency.

Earlier, during an Iftar dinner with service chiefs on March 6, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to defeating terrorism, stating: “Nigeria will defeat terrorism despite these attacks. We will not bow to insurgents.” Vice President Shettima, through his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha, affirmed that the government would pursue decisive action against insurgent groups.

Thursday’s security meeting represents a key milestone for IGP Disu, following his appointment on February 28, 2026, after the resignation of his predecessor. At the time of filing, the details of the discussions between the President and the security chiefs had not been made public.
