The Nigerian Army has refuted a claim in a widely circulated report alleging that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, intended to forcibly enlist Nigerians aged 18 and above into military service.
The Army dismissed the allegation in a statement issued by the Acting Director of Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, on Friday in Abuja.
Anele explained that the trending post had asserted that the COAS threatened mandatory conscription for youths who refused to join willingly.
The publication also alleged that 10,000 soldiers recruited the previous year had disappeared.
However, the Army spokesperson said the claims were “malicious fabrication” deliberately crafted to mislead the public and incite fear.”
Anele also disclosed that the allegations were entirely unfounded, adding that the COAS never made such remarks at any time or in any forum.
She cautioned individuals and groups circulating false and inciting information to desist, saying those found culpable would be tracked, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Anele urged the public to disregard the rumour and rely only on verified official communication channels and social media accounts for credible information.
