Prof. Cyril Odianose Usifoh, FPSN, FNAPHARM, the Immediate Past President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), delivered a heartfelt tribute in memory of the late Sir Ifeanyi Atueyi, FNAPHARM, FPSN, during a solemn ceremony attended by prominent leaders in the pharmaceutical community and relatives of the late visionary leader.
Representing the current President of PSN, Pharm Ayuba Tanko, FPSN, Prof. Usifoh shared poignant reflections on Sir Atueyi's immense contributions to the pharmacy profession in Nigeria. The tribute celebrated Sir Atueyi's lifelong dedication to advancing pharmacy practice and supporting the welfare of his colleagues, particularly the elderly members of the profession.
In his address, Prof. Usifoh recounted a touching anecdote illustrating Sir Atueyi's profound humility and respect for long-serving pharmacists. He recalled a conversation with Sir Atueyi from years ago, saying, “He once asked me, for somebody who has attended the PSN conferences regularly for about 50 years, what do you think should be done to such a person? I replied that the person deserves an award, and to my surprise, he said he was the one."
Prof. Usifoh expressed his honor in having presented an award to Sir Atueyi during his presidency at the PSN conference in Uyo, a moment he had no idea would be the last recognition extended to the esteemed leader from the society before his passing.
The tribute paid homage to Sir Atueyi’s pivotal role in uniting elder pharmacists, especially those aged 80 and above. Prof. Usifoh shared that Sir Atueyi had made significant efforts to organize an event that brought together pharmacists who were amongst the oldest in the profession, including a centenarian who celebrated his 100th birthday last December. “We had about three to four pharmacists over 90 years of age in the industry,” he noted proudly.
Additionally, Prof. Usifoh highlighted Sir Atueyi's compassionate outreach to those in need: “He visited colleagues who were sick or neglected, reminding them of their value and place within our community. He often told us that Anambra State had the largest number of elderly pharmacists in Nigeria, demonstrating his deep commitment to the well-being of his peers.”
In a deeply emotional moment, Prof. Usifoh reflected on the value of life and the mystery it holds, stating, “If God knows that I will make hell, He should take my life today. Life is a mystery that is only known to God.”
The tribute gathered numerous dignitaries from the pharmaceutical sector, family members, and friends, all coming together to honor a man whose legacy has inspired many. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Sir Atueyi's lasting impact on the pharmacy profession in Nigeria, showcasing the unity and respect within the community that he helped foster throughout his remarkable life.
