The University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria's premier university, has appointed distinguished psychologist and accomplished academic, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba, as its 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor, ushering in a new era of leadership for the nation's oldest university.

Professor Olapegba, who until his appointment served as the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), succeeds to the institution's highest office after decades of exemplary service marked by academic excellence, impactful research, and outstanding administrative leadership.

At 56, the renowned Professor of Psychology brings to the office a wealth of experience spanning teaching, research, university governance, and institutional development. A native of Igbole Quarters, Igboora, Oyo State, he was born on January 26, 1970, in Ibadan.

His academic journey began at Anglican Church Primary School, Ilutitun, in present-day Ondo State, before he completed his primary education at St. Paul's African Primary School, Lanlate. He attended Lanlate High School and proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in Psychology.

Professor Olapegba joined the services of the University of Ibadan as an Assistant Lecturer in 2000 and steadily rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Psychology in 2014, reflecting a career built on scholarship, dedication, and excellence.

Throughout his career, he has occupied several strategic leadership positions within the university, including Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, Director of Alumni Relations, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). His contributions have significantly strengthened the university's academic and administrative systems.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Olapegba has secured numerous research grants and fellowships, authored three books, published more than 110 peer-reviewed scholarly articles, and supervised a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing immensely to knowledge production in psychology and the social sciences.

His professional achievements have earned him recognition as a Fellow of the Nigerian Psychological Association, while his expertise has also been sought on several university governing councils, editorial boards of reputable academic journals, and professional bodies across Nigeria.

A devout Christian, Professor Olapegba is happily married and blessed with children.

His appointment comes at a defining moment in the history of the 78-year-old University of Ibadan, an institution widely regarded as Nigeria's leading centre of academic excellence and innovation.
