Dr. Lang Fafa Dampha, a distinguished scholar and policy advocate from the Gambia, is at the forefront of the movement to advance African linguistic and cultural heritage. With over three decades of dedicated service, Dr. Dampha has emerged as a pivotal figure in promoting African languages, recently launching the ACALAN Continental Youth Committee for the Empowerment of African Languages (ACYCEAL) at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
His professional journey began in 1985 as a Community Development Assistant in The Gambia after completing his training at the Rural Development Institute. This early experience laid the groundwork for his lifelong commitment to social development and cultural integrity. Seeking to broaden his horizons, Dr. Dampha relocated to France, where he pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language, Literature, and Civilisation from the University of Paris 7 (Jussieu), followed by a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in English Studies from the prestigious University of Paris 4 (Sorbonne).
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Dampha taught Legal English and Economic English at various French institutions. His teaching roles equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the sociocultural dimensions of language, which would later inform his leadership at the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), where he joined in 2009.
As Executive Secretary of ACALAN, Dr. Dampha has worked tirelessly to change perceptions of African languages, advocating for their recognition as vital tools for development and empowerment. The recent launch of ACYCEAL reflects this vision, engaging young leaders from across the continent in promoting multilingual education and digital inclusion. “We are transforming African languages from passive markers of heritage into dynamic tools of empowerment,” he asserted during the launch event.
Under his leadership, ACALAN has achieved notable advancements, including the establishment of 22 cross-border language commissions to promote linguistic cooperation among member states, the harmonization of orthographic systems for multiple languages, and the initiation of the African Languages Week, which has become an annual cultural milestone across the continent.
Dr. Dampha’s strategic partnerships with global technology leaders, such as Google and Microsoft, have resulted in initiatives aimed at developing AI-powered platforms for learning and preserving oral traditions. These collaborations ensure that African languages remain relevant and accessible in the digital era.
Recognizing that over 60% of Africa’s population is under 25, Dr. Dampha emphasizes the importance of youth in shaping the continent’s linguistic and cultural future. He has challenged young leaders to take an active role in the ACYCEAL Action Plan, urging them to innovate, advocate, and lead initiatives that support the empowerment of African languages.
Dr. Lang Fafa Dampha’s legacy is characterized not only by institutional achievements but also by a profound ideological commitment to the belief that African languages, when valued and empowered, can serve as catalysts for transformation and unity. His visionary leadership exemplifies the intersection of scholarship, policy, and cultural advocacy, paving the way for a more linguistically vibrant and inclusive future for Africa.
With a focus on revering and uplifting African languages, Dr. Dampha continues to inspire a new generation of advocates, shaping an equitable and culturally rich African identity on the global stage. His work signifies the enduring power of language in defining identity and culture, leaving an indelible mark on the future of Africa’s linguistic heritage.
