The Nigerian man who stabbed a State House guard in Guyana five times is still in critical condition from injuries he suffered during a shootout, police said.
The Nigerian identified as Dethiel Chimezie, had on Thursday, stormed the State House, the official residence of the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali.
He demanded to see the President and then allegedly whipped out a knife and stabbed a policeman several times to his neck and other areas of his body.
Chimezie also snatched a pistol from a Presidential Guard, ran out of the guard room onto Carmichael Street and fired several shots.
The police in a statement on Saturday, December 17, said the suspect is in a ventilator contrary to reports that he died.
"The Guyana Police Force continues its probe into the attack at the President’s official residence which occurred on the 15th day of December 2022," the statement read.
"The condition of Constable Telon Perreira who was injured by the suspect during the attack remains serious.
"On the other hand, Mr. Bethel Ikena Chimezie, the suspect continues to be treated for his injuries, and based on the most recent update from the doctor in whose care he remains, he is still on a ventilator. As such, investigators have not been able to question the suspect.
"Also, due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, the Guyana Police Force can only confirm that contact has been made with law enforcement counterparts as it relates to information related to the suspect’s background and any other pertinent information. Investigations are continue."
Meanwhile, two sources in the Guyana Police Force have confirmed to Guyana News Network that reports that Chimezie is  being held at the State House, is untrue.
One source said the investigation discovered that Chimezie potentially works at the Covid-19 Hospital at Liliendaal, ECD, through a local company that provides cleaning services. He is know to the staff there to be mannerly and religious. The staff told Police that Chimezie always prays for persons around the hospital.
Another Police source told GNN that Chimezie is Nigerian who is married to Guyanese woman who is in an alleged triangle relationship with a Presidential guard.
The source said it appears that the man recently caught his wife with the Presidential guard at his home and there was a confrontation.
The source stated that Chimezie would have apparently showed up at State House to potentially complain to President Ali about the Presidential guard.
