Maiduguri residents were on Friday terrified as multiple explosions from explosives devices rocked the capital city as police anti-bomb squad team continue to defuse several explosives planted near mosques and a market by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, security sources and witnesses said. Residents, who were close to the spots where the bombs were buried, said many casualties would have been recorded had the police not detonate the explosives. Even the police anti-bomb squad, which were able to safely detonate the bomb at the Gamboru market, near the popular Customs Area of Maiduguri, turned out to be very lucky when another unidentified bomb went off on its own when they were busy trying to defuse the one earlier discovered near the mosque premises. Abdul Marafa, a trader told journalists that “When the police were able to detonated the first explosives that blasted with minimal impact on the deserted spot, then suddenly a second bomb which was not spotted went off; but we are happy that nobody was affected,” he said. The Borno state police public relations officer, Gideon Jubrin, who confirmed the development said the police anti-bomb squad were able to “effectively demobilise” the bombs and saved many lives that may have been affected. The development has caused soldiers of the 7 Division of the Nigeria Army to embark on house-to-house search alongside operatives of the Civilian-JTF. The Borno state government had ordered the closure of the market all day to allow the security operatives effectively comb surrounding areas for possible explosives.
