Students of the Bayelsa Medical University in the early hours of Friday barricaded entrances to the institution, hindering vehicular movement in and out of the school in protesting against the non- accreditation of their courses.
Armed with placards with different inscriptions expressing their grievances, students accused the institution’s management and the state government of failure to address the problems facing the university.
Some of placards read: "Nothing Medical in a Medical University”,”We’re more than tired of deceit”,Govt. Come to our Aid”,Accredit our Courses”,”Our dreams are in ruins”, among others.
The students lamented the failure of the school to get Medicine as a course accredited, though it’s the main course in the institution.
Some of the 300 level students who spoke to journalists lamented that despite the assurances given by the school to accredit the course before their 300 level, they are yet to see any positive result.
They called for the formation of a Students Union Government in the school to among others, champion their welfare. They explained that efforts to amicably engage the school management in the past on the issues, have not yielded results.
At the time of filing this report,it was difficult getting the management of Bayelsa Medical University to respond to the matters raised by the students who vowed that no learning will continue in University until issues raised are addressed.
