Herder-farmer clashes kill 22 in Chad

Monday- 9th August, 2021: No fewer than 22 people have been killed and another 18 wounded in fighting between farmers and herders in the western province of Hadjer-Lamis, the Chadian authorities said.

According to a government spokesman, Abdramane Koulamallah, troops were deployed to maintain order and calm had been restored.

Tensions between indigenous settled farmers and nomadic Arab herders in the region are longstanding and occasionally erupt into deadly clashes.

The provincial governor, Amina Kodjiana, told the AFP news agency that the conflict broke out on Saturday between the settled Boulala people and Arab nomads in the village of Zohana, 200km (124 miles) east of the capital, N'Djamena.
