Wednesday- 16th June, 2021: Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday said 49 more people have succumbed to Covid-19, the highest figure ever registered in Uganda in a single day since March last year when the virus outbreak was confirmed in the country.

The ministry officials said the deaths occurred on Monday pushing the total number of fatalities to 508 since March last year.

Uganda is dealing with a surge of infections propelled by the Delta variant - first identified in India.

It has also reported the presence of variants first reported in the UK and South Africa.

The country's Covid positivity rate now stands at 17% - prompting fears that health facilities could run out of resources like oxygen if it gets higher.

President Yoweri Museveni announced a partial lockdown last week, closing schools and restricting travel between districts.

More than 750,000 people have been vaccinated in Uganda so far.

The country received 964,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March, which are fast running out.

Uganda has reported more than 56,000 Covid-19 cases.
