Vice-President Namandi Sambo on Thursday said the role of mathematics in the development of any society cannot be over emphasised.
Speaking at the launching/fundraising ceremony for Professor Adegoke Olubunmi International Centre, University of Ibadan, he noted that effort must be directed at improving research and teaching of mathematics in schools.
Sambo, who was represented by the Chairman Board of Trustees, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund), Dr Musa Babayo said both students and experts in the field of mathematics must be encouraged with the facilities to excel.
The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Isaac Adewole disclosed dearth of data had been described as one of the greatest challenges responsible for the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
"We lack vital figures and data, without which we cannot progress as a nation. "The government of a country cannot adequately plan for its citizens without reliable data on important socio-economic indices.
"In this country, this is where the greatest challenge to development lies. Reliable data would enable policy makers plan and make important decisions for the country's development," he said
The UI VC stated that this gave reason for the establishment of the centre which will assist the nation to train people in modelling mathematics and statistics.
According to him, if USA can have seven mathematical centres, why can't Nigeria have one."Children no longer want to study mathematics, but with this centre, it will lure them to admire the subject. The centre will increase the impact of mathematical sciences in other disciplines, and enable the mathematical sciences to respond to national needs and expand the talent based engaged in mathematical research in Nigeria," he said.
