The staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, yesterday, staged a protest against the alleged fraudulent practices of the Rector of the institution, Dr. Taiwo Akande, vowing to keep the institution’s system shut down until their demands are met and the rector relieved of her position.
The protesters expressed their displeasure of the alleged anti-workers activities of the management of the institution by occupying the Ado-Ijan highway for several hours. The institution had been on strike since October 10, 2016, over the lingering crises.
The protesters, led by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr Tunji Owoeye and his counterpart in the Senior Staff Association Nigeria Polytechnics(SSANIP), Dr Oluwole Ayeni, disrupted traffic as they held prayers on the road for several hours, leading to long queues of vehicles along that route.
The workers, who brandished leaves and chanted anti-management slogan over its threat to invoke no-work-no-pay rule to coerce them to resume work, also disrupted a seminar for agricultural services providers organised by amphi-tractor academy in the institution.
However, the Rector described the allegations against her as not genuine and frivolous, saying it was all a calculated plot to forcefully send her out of office. She added that she stopped payment of CONTISS 15 and 50 % cooperative deduction, because they have no financial backing to implement such.
