In recognition and acknowledgement of the gallant efforts of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari has saluted the courage, bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who have dauntlessly battled with the wave of terrorism, oil theft and piracy in the country, during the launch of the 2017 Armed Forces Remembrance day emblem at the Council Chambers State House in Abuja..
In a press release signed by Public Relations Officer to Hon Minister of Defence, Colonel Tukur Gusau and made available to CEOAfrica, the President, who was represented by the Vice-President Yomi Osinbajo also appreciated the noble contributions of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who paid supreme sacrifice while maintaining the unity of Nigeria and also restoring peace and security internationally.
The President also paid tribute to the members of the armed forces who suffered physical in-capacitation while in active service to the nation, promising that such sacrifice will not go unnoticed. President Buhari said “it therefore behoves on us who are living beneficiaries of their sacrifice to contribute towards the welfare and sustenance of their dependants.”
As a mark of respect to the fallen heroes, the President implored all Nigerians to procure and wear the emblem with pride throughout the remembrance period and to donate generously in support of the families of the fallen heroes. The President also commended the Ministry of Defence for the recent implementation of the pension harmonisation scheme and other welfare schemes for the welfare of the veterans.
In his welcome remarks the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali requested the President to direct that emblem should be worn by staff, in order to gain access to all government owned offices and establishments. He noted that this gesture would help deepen patriotism and show appreciation to the sacrifices of our Armed Forces.
As a mark of appreciation for the sacrifices and gallantry of the Armed Forces, the Federal Government donated ten million naira to Nigerian Legion during the emblem launch.
