Another 111 Nigerians have returned home from South Africa amid ongoing concerns over xenophobic attacks, bringing the total number of citizens evacuated from the country to 2,037.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
According to the ministry, the returnees arrived in Lagos on Thursday, October 8, 2026, aboard South African Airways Flight SA060.
The group consisted of 44 men, 23 women and 44 children. Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies received them on arrival.
The ministry revealed that the latest evacuation was financed through a $265,854 donation from the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which was earmarked to facilitate the return of 500 distressed Nigerians from South Africa.
“The evacuation of this latest batch was fully funded from the Two Hundred and Sixty-Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four US Dollars ($265,854.00) donation made by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) to support the evacuation of 500 distressed Nigerians from South Africa,” the statement read.
The latest operation marks the 15th consular evacuation conducted from South Africa since the exercise began on June 10, 2026.
With the arrival of the 111 returnees, the cumulative number of Nigerians evacuated from the country has risen to 2,037, the ministry stated.
