German embassy in Nigeria has partnered with African Health Initiative and the National Youth Service Corps scheme (NYSC) to combat malaria and other diseases among the internally displaced persons in Abuja.

The embassy, in its quest to achieving this objective has established a clinic equipped with modern laboratory facilities at New Kuchingoro IDPs camp.

Speaking about the motive behind the project, the representative of the German ambassador at the unveiling of the health facility Mr. Yacine Harrak said the project was conceived out of the need to save women and children from the deadly paws of malaria which has already claimed some lives on the camp.

"The idea for the project was that some months ago there were several malaria cases, especially children were affected, I learnt one or two of them have died; by this we felt the need to intervene, to safe these vulnerable children from dreads of malaria and other infections.

The envoy who expressed determination to combating malaria on the camp added that a drainage system has been installed to facilitate flow of stagnant water serving as breeding space for mosquitoes.

"We also installed drainage system so that water can flow off the camp, so that there would be no more breeding space for mosquitoes within the camp and we believe by that measure malaria infection will decrease very fast" he added.

Speaking on behalf of the IDPs Mr. Philemon Emmanuel, that camp's chairman expressed gratitude to the German embassy for their response to the needs of the IDPs saying for more than three years since they came to the camp access to medical facilities for their ailing members has been their major concern; adding that with the current German intervention his people now have place to turn to in times of health emergency.

"Since we came here our appeals to the government was to give us at least a clinic where our sick could be taken care of but nothing happened from the part of the government until these people saw the need to identify with our plight.

"I am so excited and I pray God to reward them accordingly" he said.

The facility, City News learnt is going to be manned by Members of the NYSC and other volunteers from African Health Initiative.
