Brazil scored the fastest goal in Olympics history as it earned passage into the gold medal game with a 6-0 semifinal thrashing of Honduras in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
Brazil, which lost in the final by Mexico at the 2012 London Olympics, moved one step closer to capturing its elusive first Olympic gold thanks to braces from Neymar and Gabriel Jesus as well as strikes from Marquinhos and Luan in a raucous Maracana Stadium.
Captain Neymar got the packed pro-Brazil crowd out of their seats in record time.
The Barcelona superstar intercepted a careless pass from Honduras centre-back Johnny Palacios at the top of the box. His toe-poke attempt was saved by charging Honduras goalkeeper Luis Lopez, but the ball deflected back off Neymar’s knee before rolling into the empty net after just 14 seconds.
Neymar stayed down on the ground during the celebration and was carried off with what appeared to be a chest injury. However, he came back on minutes later.
Brazil scored again in the 26th minute thanks to a fine move started by forward Luan. The Gremio man’s superb lob found a streaking Gabriel Jesus whose first-time toe-poke past Lopez took a slight deflection before crossing the line.
Gabriel Jesus added Brazil’s third just nine minutes later. The 19-year-old starlet latched onto a sublime Neymar through ball from midfield, cut inside a defender from the left and calmly fired into the roof of Lopez’s net to make it 3-0.
The halftime whistle offered little reprieve for the Central Americans. Brazil scored its fourth goal just six minutes after the break through centre-back Marquinhos.
The Paris Saint-Germain man was picked out by Neymar’s corner kick, bobbled his first touch but still had enough time to smash his right-footed shot past Lopez as the Honduras defence stood by and watched.
Neymar nearly scored another with a free kick in the 75th minute, but his curling effort went just inches wide of the near post.
Brazil collected its fifth minutes later when a swift move down the right saw Felipe Amderson’s cross easily finished with a Luan tap-in from three yards out.
Honduras forced a pair of fine saves from Brazil keeper Weverton just seconds later, but the Atletico Paranaense man kept his clean sheet with acrobatic stops.
Brazil was awarded a penalty when Luan was hacked down in the box by Palacios moments before the final whistle. Neymar stepped up to the spot and calmly sent Lopez the other way to complete the rout and set the stage for a Saturday showdown with either Nigeria or Germany in the final.
