No fewer than 100 people were injured when a high-speed ferry ran into an unidentified object in Hong Kong, the government said on Monday.

The ferry carrying 163 passengers and 11 crew members was on its way from Macau to Hong Kong Island around 6p.m on Sunday (1000 GMT) when it lost power and began taking on water, after running into the object in waters south of Lantau island.

The Secretary for Food and Health, Ko Wing-man, said in a statement that the seriously injured were taken to Eastern, Queen Mary and Ruttonjee hospitals.

He added that some had sustained fractures and injuries to their ribs, jaws, and shoulders.

Ferry accidents are rampant in Hong Kong, where a similar incident in June 2014 had 70 people injured. (dpa/NAN)
