Some football enthusiasts on Monday charged the U-20 Flying Eagles to maintain their current winning tempo at the ongoing U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
They spoke against the backdrop of the nation’s 2-0 victory over Hungary on June 7 in their last group stage match.
They said in separate interviews that the team which performed creditably well in their last match should keep up the pace.
The team would tackle its German opponent in the round of 16, on June 11 at Christchurch Stadium, Hamilton, after finishing second behind Brazil in Group E.
Christian Chukwu, a former skipper of the Green Eagles, said that, “The German team is going to be a tough team to play, but with resilience and team work, the Flying Eagles would defeat them.
“I know that the Germans are not easily moved and over the years, they have had their ways when they played against African teams.
“But, if the Flying Eagles put their heads together and tackle each player in the opponent camp, they will progress to the quarter-final stage,’’ he said.
Also, Amiesimaka Adokiye, a former Green Eagles’ player, said that the team should play as a team and listen to their handlers.
“It was a good game they played in their last match and the boys lived up to expectations, which showed that they listened to their coaches.
“Now that they are up against the Germans, they should go back and watch their past style of play, and device a tactical means of winning.
“They should watch out for their opponent’s `danger’ men and tackle them closely,’’ he said.
Similarly, Edema Fuludu, an ex-international said, “I am impressed with the performance of the boys because they showed resilience.
“It was a well-deserved victory for our boys, they kept the tempo going well and, hopefully, if they maintain the pace, they will perform better.
“They should keep playing as a team as they played in their previous matches, this is an evidence that they worked together.
“I give kudos to their coaches who did their homework well enough to produce such victory,’’ he said.

Azeeze Rashidi, a grassroots football coach in Ikotun,a suburb of Lagos, urged the team to be more pragmatic in its next match against Germany.
Rashidi said that it was only through such approach that the team could overwhelm its opponent.
“We have players that can take on Germany in this tournament but the team members must be very careful in their approaches.
“We should not be over-confident and we should not entertain any fear against the Germans,’’ he said.
