The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship standard-bearer in Ogun State, Mr. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, has described as pyrrhic victory, the declaration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the April governorship election, vowing to reclaim his mandate at the Election Petition Tribunal.
Isiaka declared that his resolve to challenge the results of the election was in the best interest of the populace, whose mandated he said was allegedly stolen through a conspiracy against the PDP at the poll.
He also expressed optimism that the gale of defections of PDP members to the APC would not affect the fortunes of the party in future elections.
The PDP chieftain who spoke to journalists in Ado-Ekiti shortly after the meeting of South-west leaders, hinted that all electoral fraud perpetrated during the said election would be made public.
He spoke of how his rival allegedly conspired with certain individuals who he did not reveal their identities to pervert the will of the electorate, saying such should not be left unchallenged.
Isiaka argued that the results of the election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission( INEC ) was not a true reflection of the people’s wish.
Specifically, the PDP candidate disclosed that his petition would address, amongst other things ,the alleged deployment of some unwholesome and fake police officers and counterfeit Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that were used by some electorate.
However, the Ogun State Government has advised Isiaka to allow the judiciary to do their work while he keeps his cool and stop making prejudicial statements.
The government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, said: “We believe the time for campaign is over. The people have made their choice. It is good that Mr. Isiaka has gone to the Election Petition Tribunal. We shall meet him in the court room. Our advice to him is that he should allow the judiciary to do their work while he keeps his cool and stop making prejudicial statements.”
It equally described the views expressed by Isiaka as a reflection of his ignorance and narrow world view about developments, even within the country.
The state government said any economy where goods and services cannot be easily moved from one point to another is doomed and the rail system has proved to be the best means of mass movement. It is equally the easiest way to preserve, safeguard and complement the new road network now emerging in Ogun State.
It added that with the federal and neighbouring Lagos State Governments commencing the construction of a light rail network, Ogun State needs to quickly key into it so as not to be deprived of the resultant benefits.
“Ogun State, by signing the contract with CCECC is only joining a network that both the Federal and Lagos Governments are about to create. That is why we are using the same contractor as them. This will save money, time and ensure compatibility.
“We are surprised that Mr. Isiaka did not know about the proposed light rail until last week. We publicly signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2013 so that the contractor could prepare the design for us.
The design was in fact featured prominently in the 2014 state calendar and other publications of the State Government”, the government noted.
It then advised Isiaka to always check his facts well before rushing to make public statements, which are unbecoming of a man aspiring to govern the state. The government said there were minutes of the Executive Council and other records, which indicated that the Administration had done elaborate preliminary studies and held necessary discussions before embarking on the project.
The state government said that the statement by Isiaka describing the rail project as a misplaced priority was only a reflection of his myopic world view, which would have kept Ogun State in her 1976 state if the PDP candidate had been elected governor.
