DEPUTY Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has allayed fears about his intention to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying Ndigbo have no regret voting for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Addressing his supporters from his Enugu-West senatorial zone on Tuesday, at his Enugu resident, Ekweremadu said he would swim and sink with PDP, instead of moving over to the opposition because of the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP, at the March 28 polls.
Ekweremadu, however, noted that Ndigbo had nothing against the president-elect, General-Muhammadu Buhari, adding that Igbo would work hand-in-hand with Buhari in line with their regional agenda and overall development of Nigeria.
“Ndigbo will give General Buhari all the support to succeed because he was elected as the president of Nigeria, and not president of APC or any section of the country in particular,” he said.
Ekweremadu, who was re-elected as the Senator representing Enugu-West senatorial district, said though he would not hold brief for all PDP stalwarts of the South-East extraction, he assured “on PDP we stand.”
He averred that PDP leaders in the South-East were committed to further repositioning the party, adding that “we may not have the presidency, but we are strong in the states and remain the party to beat.”
According to him, though the defeat of President Jonathan was most unpredictable loss, by his calmness, Nigeria had won again, proving the doomsday prophets wrong.
He assured Ndigbo that they had done nothing to be ashamed of, insisting that they owed no one apology for casting their ballots for the PDP.
“I have read and listened to many lament what they regard as the South-East misadventure, in view of the emerging scenarios at the Federal level. But, let me assure you that Ndigbo have done nothing to be ashamed of and we owe no one apologies for casting our ballots for the PDP.
“For me, this is instead a defining moment for Ndigbo because we spoke with one voice and we are proud of our electoral decisions. We took a principled position and take full responsibility of the political choices. I have read various statements credited to some opposition elements on how the South-East and the PDP would be overrun in the forthcoming governorship election,” Ekweremadu said.
On the alleged threat made by Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu against Igbos, Ekweremadu stated that “Ndigbo would not be intimidated in any part of Nigeria, “not the least Lagos State where our people have contributed immensely to its development and economy.”
