A two-storey building under construction on Sultan Road in the Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State collapsed on Friday morning, leaving one person trapped beneath the rubble after three others were rescued.
The incident occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on July 10, 2026, sparking an emergency rescue operation at the construction site.
Eyewitnesses said workers on the building noticed signs of an imminent structural failure while working on the upper floor and immediately evacuated the area. However, four people, including a security guard and a commercial tricycle rider, were caught in the collapse.
Confirming the incident, one of the construction workers, Shuaibu Yaro, said the site engineer had detected warning signs of the impending collapse and alerted workers to leave the building.
"We came to work here and had started taking sand upstairs when the site engineer noticed the signs of collapse. We rushed to safety, but unfortunately three people were in front of the gate and one other person was trapped," Yaro said.
He disclosed that three victims, including the security guard and his friend, were successfully rescued from the debris, while efforts were continuing to free the remaining trapped person.
"The three rescued victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to Sir Muhammadu Sanusi Hospital in Kano for medical attention," he added.
Rescue teams were still working at the scene as of the time of filing this report, while the cause of the building collapse had yet to be officially determined.
