The Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 6, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, has instructed all Commissioners of Police in the zone to mop up all arms before the general election.
Ogunsakin said this in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Wednesday, during the signing of a peace accord with candidates of all political parties.
He said that the exercise was to ensure peace before, during and after the general elections.
According to him, arms proliferation was a major problem confronting some parts of the zone.
“In view of the fact that arms proliferation has always been a major issue in some parts of the zone, I have directed the Akwa Ibom Police Command to embark on intensive stop-and-search in order to nip in the bud any unwholesome act that can impede the peaceful conduct of the general elections,” the AIG said.
He, however, asked the commissioners to intensify raids on black spots in preparation for the elections in order to ensure that none of the states under the zone is turned into a hiding place for criminals.
Ogunsakin urged candidates of all political parties to respect the peace accord, warning that no one would be spared for violating any electoral law.
He said, “I am urging all politicians, stakeholders and political actors to play the game according to the rules.”
The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Umana Umana, promised to keep to the rules of the game.
Umana urged the security agencies in the state to remain firm and unbiased in ensuring security, peace and order in the state.
The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, praised all security agencies in the state for providing security for all political parties during their campaigns.
Governorship candidates of other political parties pledged to ensure peaceful conduct of the general elections in the state.
The highpoint of the event was the signing of peace accord by all the candidates of the various political parties present.
