Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has declared that his administration will work towards securing at least 50 per cent of the state’s votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Soludo made the declaration on Saturday at Ekwueme Square, Awka, during the flag-off of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) 2027 campaign, where he announced the party’s decision to adopt Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate.
The governor explained that APGA would not present a presidential candidate in the forthcoming election, making it possible for the party to support Tinubu, who will contest on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Today, we adopt the APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as our candidate,” he announced.
Soludo attributed the decision to what he described as Tinubu’s longstanding concern for the Igbo people, particularly Anambra State.
He recalled that during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State, several indigenes of Anambra were appointed to strategic positions in the state, noting that the gesture demonstrated his relationship with the South-East.
The governor further explained that APGA’s decision was not entirely new, pointing out that the party had previously adopted presidential candidates of other political parties during past elections.
He expressed concern that Anambra recorded fewer than 5,000 votes for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, despite the President's continued efforts to address challenges affecting the state and the South-East.
Calling on residents to support Tinubu in 2027, Soludo argued that such a decision would strengthen the region's engagement with the Federal Government and create opportunities to negotiate for development projects and other benefits.
“We need to vote for him in order to sit with the government at the centre and negotiate for the development of the South-East and Anambra State,” he said.
The governor’s declaration places APGA’s political support behind Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Soludo setting a target of at least 50 per cent of Anambra’s votes for the incumbent President.
