The Senate has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to launch an urgent investigation into the killing of 113 persons, including six Mobile Police officers, in Benue North-East Senatorial District.

The call followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende, representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, over recurring deadly attacks in Ukum, Katsina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Moving the motion, Udende expressed concern over the persistent violence, which he said had resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of residents across the affected communities.

He identified four separate attacks, including the killing of 24 persons in Sai, Katsina-Ala LGA; 63 persons in Bom and Aboajio villages in Ukum LGA; and 15 persons, among them six Mobile Police officers, in Ayilamo, Logo LGA.

He added that another 11 persons were killed in Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages in Ukum LGA on October 8, 2026, bringing the total number of fatalities from the four incidents to 113.

The senator noted that the attacks had not only claimed numerous lives but had also destroyed homes and disrupted economic activities, particularly farming, leaving residents increasingly vulnerable.

Following deliberations, the Senate condemned the killings and observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims. It also sympathised with their families and the Nigeria Police Force over the deaths of the six officers.

The lawmakers further called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff and other heads of security and intelligence agencies to strengthen security operations in the affected areas.

They also urged the relevant agencies to establish effective early-warning systems and rapid-response mechanisms to prevent further attacks and ensure the sustained protection of vulnerable communities.

Speaking on the development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed grave concern over the killing of security personnel, questioning the safety of civilians who lacked the capacity to defend themselves against armed attackers.

“If military personnel and other armed security officers are killed in these attacks, what happens to communities that have no means of defending themselves? We must bring this matter to the attention of the Service Chiefs so that they can take appropriate action to strengthen security in the affected areas,” Akpabio said.

The Senate's resolution highlights the urgent need for stronger security coordination and proactive measures to curb the recurring violence in Benue State, protect vulnerable residents and prevent further loss of lives.
