The Government of Mexico has formally approved the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the country.

Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his X handle, disclosing that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, had delivered the agreement to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.

The agreement signifies Mexico’s formal acceptance of Omokri as Nigeria’s envoy to the country.

According to Omokri, he will serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agreement from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States,” he wrote.

President Bola Tinubu had nominated Omokri in November 2025 alongside 68 other ambassadorial nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025, while Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously disclosed that Mexico and Japan were yet to grant agreement to Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees posted to the two countries. The ministry, however, expressed optimism that the required diplomatic approvals would be secured in due course.

Mexico’s approval now clears the way for Omokri to take up his diplomatic assignment, representing Nigeria in Mexico and, concurrently, in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
