The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reportedly approved a petition by the family of late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, requesting a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family made this known through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.

Ogungbe said the fresh investigation was already underway, clarifying that it was separate from a suit recently dismissed by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to him, the Aloba family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, while it was received at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7.

He said the petition highlighted alleged inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The lawyer said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and directed the Lagos State Police Command to take immediate action.

He added that the family was later informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter. The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process,” Ogungbe stated.

The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026.

Ogungbe explained that the suit was distinct from the petition submitted by the Aloba family and was neither filed by the family nor instituted with its knowledge or consent.

“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.

The family called on the police to conduct the investigation diligently, independently and professionally, with all relevant persons and circumstances examined.
