The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has released his handover document to counter claims by the Anambra State Government that his administration left behind loans and other financial liabilities.
The document was made public on Wednesday by the Interim National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, Dr Yinusa Tanko.
Dated March 17, 2024, the document contains a summary of Anambra State’s financial position as of the close of business on that date and indicates a net positive balance of more than N86 billion.
The release followed recent claims by officials of the Anambra State Government that the administration was still servicing debts and other financial obligations inherited from previous governments, including the administration of Obi.
The state government had cited eight outstanding external loans with a combined balance of about $92.35 million, equivalent to roughly N127.37 billion as of June 30, 2026.
It also raised concerns over alleged unpaid gratuities, pensions and other related financial obligations inherited by the current administration.
The latest development has renewed the debate over the financial position of Anambra State at the end of Obi’s tenure as governor and the liabilities allegedly inherited by subsequent administrations.
The Presidency had earlier challenged Obi to honour his pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if evidence emerged that his administration left unpaid liabilities while he was governor of Anambra State.
