African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the reported attack on Peter Obi during his visit to Benue State.

Recall that suspected thugs on Tuesday allegedly blocked Obi from entering the state as he headed to Yelwata for a humanitarian outreach to communities affected by persistent terrorist attacks.

The Benue State Government, however, denied any involvement in the incident, saying it neither sponsored the suspected political thugs nor had prior knowledge of Obi’s visit.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Atiku described the reported attack as unacceptable and strongly condemned the obstruction of Obi’s movement.

He said Obi was “brutally prevented from reaching bereaved families of Yelwata, Benue State, to offer his condolences over the persistent terrorist attacks on them.”

According to Atiku, the incident was “unacceptable, anti-democratic and deeply shameful.”

He called on the relevant authorities to immediately investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure they are held accountable.

Atiku also urged authorities to guarantee the safety and freedom of political leaders to undertake their legitimate activities without intimidation or obstruction.
