The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to deploy a real-time operational tracker to monitor preparations for the 2027 General Election across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday, September 7, 2026, while opening a two-day strategic workshop for the commission’s Administrative Secretaries at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

Amupitan said the workshop would develop a standard Excel-based operational tracker that would enable the commission to monitor election preparations uniformly across all states.

According to him, the tracker would be linked to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard as well as the Election Project Plan, providing a centralised system for monitoring critical election activities.

He noted that the commission had previously lacked a uniform mechanism for tracking the operational responsibilities of its Administrative Secretaries.

With the new system, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), Supervising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and officials at the headquarters would have immediate access to information on the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc personnel and the level of preparedness in each state.

“This will enable us to move from reactive responses to proactive management,” Amupitan said.

The INEC chairman explained that the tracker would remain in use beyond the 2027 election, forming part of the commission’s operational framework and onboarding system for Administrative Secretaries.

He said the initiative had become necessary as the National Register of Voters approaches 100 million registered voters, further increasing the scale and complexity of election administration in the country.

The two-day workshop is focusing on five key areas: Continuous Voter Registration, logistics and materials management, electoral technology, optimisation of ad hoc staff and financial compliance.

Amupitan said INEC was also drawing lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including the Osun State governorship election, where he said logistics and electoral technology performed effectively.

He said the commission was determined to replicate and improve on those gains nationwide as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election, which is approximately six months away.
