Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that his decision to contest the 2027 presidential election is motivated by the need to tackle the numerous challenges facing the country, stressing that “Nigeria must work.”
Obi made the declaration as political campaigns for the 2027 presidential election officially commenced, signalling the beginning of what is expected to be a keenly contested race.
“I consider myself to be among those contesting to address the challenges Nigeria is currently facing. I join this contest with one firm conviction: Nigeria must work,” Obi said in his address to Nigerians.
The former Anambra State governor said his ambition was not motivated by personal interest but by a commitment to finding lasting solutions to the country’s economic and social challenges.
His campaign is expected to centre on key issues including the rising cost of living, insecurity, unemployment, education and measures to improve the welfare and living standards of Nigerians.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party and attracted substantial support, particularly among young Nigerians, is now seeking to broaden his political base and build a wider coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
With campaigns now underway, major presidential contenders are expected to intensify their nationwide engagements as they seek to convince voters and secure support ahead of the election.
Obi’s running mate and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also called on Nigerians to support their ticket, describing the 2027 election as an opportunity for citizens to chart a new course for the country.
Kwankwaso highlighted rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity and economic uncertainty as some of the pressing challenges requiring urgent government intervention.
Ahead of the campaign season, Obi and other presidential candidates signed the National Peace Accord, pledging to promote peaceful and issue-based campaigns throughout the electoral process.
