The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, dismissed the speculation doing the rounds that INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has either been forced to resign or sacked out rightly by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Also, the Presidency dismissed the rumour in some online and social media that Professor Jega had been sacked by the Federal Government.

In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, on Tuesday, the chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu, said the purported sack or resignation of Jega was all false and should be disregarded by all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community.

According to Idowu, “it is all rumour. The chairman attended the commission’s meeting today and he presided over the meeting in his capacity as the chairman. He was absolutely on his seat treating files. You are free to go to his office to confirm as we speak.”

Jega’s tenure is expected to end on June 30.

A top source from the Office of the National Security Adviser, Colonel Bello Fadile (retd), also warned politicians spreading falsehood capable of inciting violence to desist from doing so.

He noted that he had received many calls concerning the rumour from all parts of the country.

Fadile described the rumoured sack as an outright falsehood and mischievous propaganda, allegedly engineered by some forces within the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The rumoured sack of Jega is not from the Presidency, but part of the propaganda by the opposition to soil the good name of the president, to discredit the government and cause trouble,” the source noted.

The presidency official noted that the current administration is law a abiding government that “follows the constitution in the discharge of its duties, including that which concerns the chairman of INEC or any member for that matter.”

He, however, called on Nigerians, the APC and their supporters who are attacking the military and security forces and dragging them into political issues to allow them concentrate on the immediate task of defeating the Boko Haram terrorists.

He also wondered why such rumour should gain ground when there is no letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announcing the sack.
