The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified that no decision has been made to replace the current National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform, contrary to reports suggesting that Adire fabric had been approved.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Olawande explained that comments he made during a television appearance were misinterpreted, leading to speculation about changes to the NYSC uniform.
According to the minister, he merely referenced Adire and Ankara as examples of proposals that had been discussed during meetings on ongoing reforms within the scheme.
“After my brief appearance earlier today, my attention was drawn to some media reports regarding the ongoing reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), particularly the issue of a proposed uniform,” he said.
“Yes, I mentioned Adire during the conversation. I also mentioned Ankara. These were simply examples of suggestions that have been presented during our meetings. It was not an announcement that any specific fabric would replace the current NYSC uniform.”
Olawande stressed that authorities are currently reviewing various options, taking into account factors such as professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, affordability, and the promotion of national pride.
“For the record, no final decision has been made regarding the fabric or design of the NYSC uniform,” he stated.
He added that, like other aspects of the ongoing NYSC reform process, any eventual decision would be based on extensive stakeholder consultations and what is considered best for the scheme and the country.
The minister urged Nigerians to remain engaged in discussions surrounding the broader reform agenda, noting that the changes are aimed at making the NYSC more relevant to current realities by enhancing employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, improving service delivery, and easing the transition from education to productive careers.
While acknowledging public interest in the proposed uniform, Olawande said the debate should not overshadow the wider reforms designed to empower young Nigerians and reposition the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.
He also thanked Nigerians for their feedback and assured the public that all proposals would be carefully evaluated in the best interest of the nation.
