Canada advanced to the Round of 16 of the World Cup after edging South Africa 1-0 in a tense knockout-stage clash decided by a dramatic stoppage-time goal.

Stephen Eustaquio emerged as the match-winner, firing home in the 92nd minute to secure victory for the co-hosts and keep their World Cup dream alive.

South Africa, making history with their first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds following a group-stage win over South Korea, put up a determined display. The Africans remained compact in defence and looked dangerous on the break but struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Eustaquio struck late to break South African hearts and send Canada into the next round. The defeat brought an end to South Africa's memorable campaign, which marked a significant milestone in the nation's World Cup history.
