The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained several officers accused of extorting motorists, following the circulation of a viral video showing the alleged misconduct.
The officers, attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Port Harcourt, were reportedly targeting motorists, particularly drivers of vehicles with tinted windows, and demanding money despite the presentation of valid permits.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, the command confirmed the arrest of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers implicated in the incident.
The statement said the Commissioner ordered the immediate arrest, detention and investigation of the officers after receiving reports of extortion and other unprofessional conduct.
“Extortion, illegal collection of money and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Adepoju said.
He assured residents that the investigation would be conducted transparently and without bias, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Act and other relevant regulations.
The command urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct, corruption and abuse of office through established complaint channels, reiterating its commitment to accountability, professionalism and ethical policing.
