The House of Representatives has scheduled a vote on a constitutional amendment seeking to establish state and local police forces, in a bid to address rising insecurity across Nigeria.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also leads the House Committee on Constitution Review, announced after plenary that lawmakers have prioritised the state police proposal over other constitutional amendment bills.
He directed members currently on oversight assignments outside Abuja to suspend their engagements and return to the National Assembly for the voting session slated for Thursday, June 11.
The proposed legislation, which is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker alongside 14 other lawmakers, is part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing structure.
