Aisha Yesufu, activist and ally of the Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Yesufu had declared her intention on May 6 to contest the 2027 FCT senatorial election after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying her decision was informed by leadership experience gained during her time in the ADC.
In recent days, however, there had been speculation that the party had moved to favour another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who was already a member of the party prior to Yesufu’s defection.
In a statement issued on Friday, Yesufu confirmed that the party would not be conducting primaries for the FCT Senate seat, a development that effectively brought her aspiration to an end.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.
She urged her supporters to remain calm and maintain focus on broader political objectives ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence in a positive outcome for the country.
“I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she said, while appreciating supporters of her campaign.
“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.”
Yesufu also said she would continue grassroots engagement across the six area councils of the FCT in the coming weeks as part of her ongoing advocacy for improved governance.
“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT.”
