The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has introduced a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons across the country.
The development was announced on Monday, May 18, in a notice published on the agency’s official X handle.
According to the NRS, the initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which makes it mandatory for every taxable individual and entity to obtain a Tax ID.
The agency said the new framework is designed to strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery among federal and sub-national tax authorities.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the statement read.
The NRS explained that the system would consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and promote more efficient management of tax-related information nationwide.
According to the agency, the initiative is also expected to simplify tax compliance procedures, including taxpayer registration, filing of returns, and payment processes.
“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures,” the agency stated.
The revenue authority further noted that the system would improve accountability and transparency in tax collection by enhancing the visibility and tracking of taxpayer information.
“The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection,” the statement added.
The NRS said the framework would also harmonise taxpayer data across all tiers of government, creating a more coordinated and efficient national tax administration system.
