The All Progressives Congress (APC) has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s 2027 presidential primaries.
The decision was reached during the 188th meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
Morka said the NWC resolved to deem President Tinubu “duly screened” in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, thereby clearing him to participate in the forthcoming primary election process without appearing before a screening panel.
According to the statement, the decision was made pursuant to Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the APC Constitution, which empowers the NWC to organise and supervise party primaries and, where necessary, grant waivers in special circumstances in the interest of the party.
The APC noted that Tinubu, as the incumbent president and leader of the party, had already secured widespread endorsements and a vote of confidence from key stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), members of the National Assembly, and other party organs during the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, as well as at other statutory meetings.
The party further argued that requiring the president to undergo another screening exercise after being screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries would be “redundant and unnecessary.”
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, James Faleke, has reportedly purchased Tinubu’s nomination form for the 2027 presidential race.
President Tinubu was elected in the 2023 presidential election, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi, who contested under the Labour Party (LP).
