Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerian workers of the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws aimed at improving their living and working conditions.

In a message marking International Workers' Day 2026, the Senate President congratulated workers across the country, commending their resilience, dedication, and contributions to national development despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.

The statement, signed by Akpabio and released on Friday through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, highlighted the critical role workers play in sustaining Nigeria’s economy and democratic institutions.

“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend the resilient and patriotic workers whose sacrifice continues to sustain the heartbeat of our nation,” he said.

Akpabio paid tribute to professionals across key sectors, including teachers, farmers, healthcare workers, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees, describing them as “the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy.”

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by workers, particularly rising living costs and increasing workplace demands, and reiterated the Senate’s resolve to address these concerns through legislative measures.

According to him, the 10th National Assembly is focused on policies that will guarantee a living wage, improve workplace safety, reform pension systems, and expand job opportunities while protecting the dignity of labour.

Akpabio noted that initiatives such as the National Minimum Wage Act and other welfare measures reflect ongoing efforts to improve workers’ conditions.

He also called on employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritise employee welfare, stressing that a motivated workforce is essential for national productivity and economic growth.

The Senate President further commended labour unions for their cooperation and pledged continued collaboration with them to advance workers’ interests.

He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian workers can look to the future with “hope, dignity, and confidence,” and wished citizens a happy Workers’ Day.
