The Federal Government has convened an emergency stakeholders’ meeting for April 22, 2026, in a bid to address rising tensions in the aviation sector following a sharp increase in the price of JetA1 fuel.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the development in a letter dated April 16, 2026, and addressed to airline operators across the country.
The move comes amid growing concerns from domestic airlines, which have warned of a potential shutdown of operations or significant increases in airfares due to escalating fuel costs. The price of JetA1 has surged by approximately 300 percent, rising from about ₦900 per litre to over ₦3,000 per litre in recent weeks.
Airline operators argue that the spike in fuel prices—one of the largest components of operating expenses—has made current fare structures unsustainable.
In response, Keyamo assured operators that the Federal Government is taking the matter seriously and is committed to preventing a disruption in air travel services.
“I wish to formally assure you that the concerns raised by your members have received the full attention of the Federal Government, and we shall take immediate steps to address the issues,” the minister stated.
He added that the planned high-level meeting in Abuja would bring together key industry stakeholders and regulatory authorities to develop a “prompt, practical, and sustainable resolution” to the crisis. Details of the meeting venue and time are expected to be communicated in due course.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine the immediate future of Nigeria’s aviation sector, as both operators and passengers brace for possible fare adjustments or service disruptions.
