Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed readiness to support any consensus presidential candidate that may emerge from the coalition being formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Atiku addressed concerns about unity within the emerging coalition and outlined the process for selecting its presidential flagbearer.
He noted that the coalition’s primary objective is to reach a consensus candidate, stressing that the emphasis should be on collective support rather than individual withdrawal.
“It’s not the issue of stepping aside, but whether I would support,” Atiku said. “The first option is to work out a consensus. If that does not happen, then we will proceed to a direct primary, and I will support whoever emerges.”
He reiterated that consensus remains the coalition’s preferred approach, adding that a primary election would only serve as an alternative if agreement cannot be reached.
When asked whether he would forget his ambition in favour of Obi if the former governor is deemed more popular, Atiku maintained his stance.
“I will step aside for any winner,” he said, adding, “Of course, if he is a contender, why not.”
Atiku’s comments underscore ongoing efforts among opposition figures to present a united front ahead of future elections, amid continued discussions on coalition-building and candidate selection.
